We know what you’re thinking: a rot board fence doesn’t sound like something you’d want. And yet, its name is a little misleading. The rot board actually does the opposite of what you think it does. It helps to preserve the fence rather than contribute to its breakdown. The board prevents damage to the fence from debris, dirt, grass, rodents, and moisture. What else should you know about these fences? Sit back, relax, and keep reading!
What Are Rot Boards?
Again, the notion of rot boards will probably unsettle you. But these pressure-treated slabs of lumber benefit you despite their odd and potentially off-putting name. Come on, give them a chance! The rot board runs horizontally along the ground where the fence is. It doesn’t matter whether you have mounted on the inside of the fence or the outside. Either way, it still serves the same purpose. Rotting from wet fall weather is more damaging than you might expect, but with these boards in place, your wooden fence won’t decay as fast!
Getting What You Need Together
So the next question you probably want to have answered is, “okay, what do I need?” To build such a fence, you’ll have to gather a few necessary tools and supplies. Then the next step is to clean up your fence – get rid of any dirt and debris you see stuck to the posts or pickets that touch the ground. Doing the math is important, too, since you don’t want to run out of boards before the installation process is complete. After that, assemble a set of pencils, deck screws, levels, measuring tapes, safety gear, and a circular saw. Without these pieces of equipment, adding the rot board is next to impossible.
Measure Twice, Cut Once
Measuring out the lumber allows you to make sure your cuts go where you want them. The pencil can literally mark your place, so you won’t forget as you go along. Be careful using the saw since you don’t want to injure yourself on the spinning blade. Once you’ve reached the corner post, you’re almost done. Double-check to make sure everything is secured. And if your wooden fence is made from cedar, remove algae and moss buildup with a pressure washer.
