What Are Split Rail Fences?

That said, if you’re looking for something a bit different, then investing in a split rail fence isn’t a bad idea.

Let’s say that your current fence just isn’t cutting it anymore. That said, if you’re looking for something a bit different, then investing in a split rail fence isn’t a bad idea. You might be wondering what sets these fences apart from their counterparts. Well, let’s find out together

Split Rail Fences

Split rail fences are a variation on the classic wooden fence. The wooden post carries multiple rails, and this style is most popular around ranches and farms since they make great livestock fencing. Although these fences typically feature two or three rails at a time, this is not a standard design. In fact, it depends on the height and width of the fence itself. These fences also don’t have caps, though this addition is just fine if you wish to install them on your split rail fence.

Crossbuck & Stacked

You will also probably see crossbuck-style split rail fences. They use two rails that are joined by an X. Meanwhile, a triple-rail crossbuck uses three rails that form a zigzag pattern. Stacked split rail fences are another option to explore. Try using cedarwood for this type of fence; you’ll notice that there aren’t any posts attached!

The Materials

Now let’s talk about some of the materials involved. We’ve already mentioned cedarwood, but what are some other possibilities? Oak and pine are two other common materials, but regardless of the wood type, using the technique of staining the fence cannot be overlooked. Staining the fence sounds like odd advice, but it is a protective coating that prevents the fence from rotting or falling victim to damage from insects. Plus, any weathering that happens just improves how aesthetically pleasing they are.

Ways to Use Them

Finally, let’s close on some purposes for these fences. They are used similarly to picket fences and chain-link fences. These fences also help you define your property lines and can keep horses in, although they aren’t suited to keeping smaller pets, like cats and dogs, inside your yard.
