Taking Care of Your Fences During Fall Yard Work

Taking Care of Your Fence During Fall Yard Work

How much time have you spent on yard work lately? Here’s how you can take even better care of your fences when you’re doing work in the yard.

How much time have you spent on yard work lately? You might not be so keen to do it because of the unexpectedly high temperatures outside. But once the cooler fall weather rolls in, you might want to spend more time outside. Here’s how you can take even better care of your fences when you’re doing work in the yard.

Look for Damage

No matter what fence you have, you need to be on the lookout for any damage. Wooden fences can start to rot after being rained on too often during the spring and summer. Fall is a dry time, but it can still be stormy unexpectedly. If the boards are falling over, the nails are coming loose, and the gate is sagging, that’s how you know the fence is damaged and needs to be repaired or replaced before it completely collapses.

Don’t Mow Too Close

Even though the weather is still cooling down, you’re still going to be spending time taking care of your lawn. One of the easiest ways to do this is to mow your lawn. Whether you use a riding mower or rely on a push mower, don’t get too close to your fence. The blades on the mower could leave dents or scratches, even if your fence is made of metal. Plus, you’ll leave grass clippings and clods of dirt that you’ll have to wash away, especially if you have a vinyl fence in your yard.

Keep Leaves and Water Away

You’ll also need to keep leaves and water away from your fence. While the leaves on your trees haven’t started to drop, a few weeks from now they’ll be everywhere. You need to rake them up into piles that are well away from all sections of your fence. That way, they can’t trap moisture or dirt on your fence that will draw insects to them. While water is a key part of keeping your fences clean, they can also cause your fence to wear down prematurely, so do what you can to keep your fence safe.
