Once you’ve installed your wood fence, you want to be sure you keep it as safe as possible. You already know that birds and squirrels can wreak havoc on your fence, not to mention your pets (although they don’t mean it!) But other members of the animal kingdom can do plenty of damage to your new wood fence. You’ll want to keep these pesky critters away from your fence.
Termites
Humidity attracts termites, and unfortunately, humidity is what you’ll often find in Virginia Beach, or in nearby Norfolk. But the main problem with humidity is that it will draw termites to your yard where they will proceed to chow down your wood fence. Whenever you find signs of termite damage, take action quickly – replace the planks or boards or posts. Get rid of the wood entirely and install some new wood so that you don’t run the risk of allowing termite eggs to linger.
Wood-Borers
You might not expect beetles to present a threat to your wood fence. Sadly, wood-borer beetles can ruin your fence. They’ll make holes in your fence where they’ll lay down their eggs and settle. Young beetles will use your fence as a ready source of food. Although you might not see problems right away, you should still inspect your fence. After all, if you haven’t repainted your fence or pressure-treated it, then it’s an invitation for these beetles to start moving into your fence.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are bigger than other types of ants, and you can recognize them because they’ll either be brown or black. You’ll also be more likely to spot them at night when they are out and about hunting for food. Make sure your wood fence isn’t rotting or has any other form of moisture damage since this will attract the carpenter ants to make their home in there. Thus, if you think you have carpenter ants, then it’s time to replace your wood fence with one that is in better shape.
