At some point, your fence will wear out. This is just a fact of life and a fact of nature, if you can believe it. One type of fence that may wear down faster than its counterparts is the iconic wooden fence. Fence replacement is a wise investment, even if you don’t think it is necessary. Timely preventative maintenance does an excellent job of extending their lifetime of service, even so, time marches on and Mother Nature isn’t always the most forgiving mistress.
The Boards are Broken or Damaged
The first and most obvious sign something is wrong is when the fence boards are clearly broken or damaged. The forces of deterioration, wear and tear, and soil erosion all come together to slowly and insidiously attack the integrity of your fence. It’s easy to repair or replace individual boards, but sadly, this isn’t always the case. When several boards look damaged, or the fence itself is close to falling apart, then it’s time to begin the fence replacement process.
The Fence is Leaning or Sagging
Your fence shouldn’t start to lean or sag. Sometimes, this problem is easy enough to remedy simply by swapping out an old fence post for a newer one. However, consider the condition of the posts. If too many of them are warped, then it’s another sign you will need fence replacement sooner rather than later.
You See Signs of Insect Presence
Insects of all kinds can wreak havoc on your fence, increasing the need for fence replacement projects. Holes, gnawing, and boring are all signs of insect damage. If you can stop the bugs (mainly termites) from gaining a foothold, then you can save your fence. In many cases, though, by the time you notice anything, it’s already too late. Excessive damage leads to the fence being compromised and will need to be replaced entirely instead of section-by-section.
Overall Repair Investments
With all of this mind, you probably want to know how much it costs to repair or replace your current fence. That’s a fair question. How old is your fence, and how badly damaged is it? Replacing your fence could end up saving you more money than you expect especially since constant upkeep can become a financial burden.
