Four Ways To Make A Wooden Fence More Secure
A fence on your property is a valuable addition. Fences provide essential services, from intruders and would-be thrives to keeping kids and pets in. Fences can also be a significant investment, improving curb appeal and property value and making it easier to sell your house (most buyers with families want fenced-in yards).
Wood is still the most popular fencing material, so if you’ve recently bought a property with a fence, the odds are pretty good that it is a wooden fence.
Even if it is one you’ve just installed, it may be likely that you’re interested in ways to make it even more formidable. Read on for four tips to make your’s even more secure.
Direction Matters
During installation, you only have control over this feature – the rough side is easier to scale, so face that in. For many people, keeping danger out is vital, so you don’t want a unit that is easy to climb on the outside. The rough side is the side that has the posts and brackets, which make climbing easier. If you don’t want those facing in either (say you don’t want your kids to be able to climb either), consider a good neighbor fence.
Height Helps
Taller fences are more secure. If your’s is as safe as possible, it should be taller. If you already have a shorter one, there are ways to add additional height, usually with lattice toppers. These are not as secure as new full-height privacy, but they help.
Anti-Climb Additions
If you want your unit to be secure, it has to be anti-climb, as discussed above. For an existing one, there are some things you can add to make it anti-climb. For instance, planting aggressive thorny plants along the entire outer perimeter could be an excellent way to keep people from trying to climb it.
Likewise, you can install anti-climb spikes on the top of the fence. Even anti-climb paint is available.
Add Non-Fence Security Elements
Finally, consider using floodlights and cameras to make your property even more secure. These items must be visible and apparent if you want them to be a deterrent.
