Now that the weather is getting colder, you might not be inclined to doing anything outside. Instead, you’ll just want to curl up under a blanket while wearing a sweater and sipping hot chocolate. But you can take some time to install a fence and then reward yourself with some relaxation. The next time you start the fence installation process, you might be wondering what fence post spikes are.
What Are They?
Digging into the ground to make room for the fence posts is one of the hardest parts of building a fence. But you won’t need to deal with that or fool around with concrete when you have fence post spikes on hand. These spikes are made of metal, and as such, are heavy. You will find them in lengths of 24 inches (two feet) or sometimes 30 inches, just over two feet but not quite three. With these spikes, you can anchor the fence posts to support your new fence. Now you just need to put the spike in the ground and avoid all of that extra labor.
How Do They Work?
One of your biggest problems during any fence installation project is how to protect the newly-built fence. For instance, dirt and mud can contribute to a wooden fence rotting more quickly, especially if that fence rests directly on the ground. The base of the spike will rot eventually, but then all you have to do is switch out the post instead of having to replace the entire fence.
Frost on the ground will eventually cause the fence posts to sag. This problem won’t happen as often or as badly when you have fence post spikes. Each spike has a swivel on it that allows you to adjust it back its normal, or plumb level without too much effort.
Are There Any Drawbacks?
These spikes are best-suited for wooden fences; they won’t work as well with chain link or vinyl fences. Plus, you can’t make the fences as high, so if height is a concern, you may want to choose another option. But if all you need is a wood fence, then using these spikes makes fence installation so much easier!
