Working outside in the wind and rain is never fun. Even taking your dog for a walk can be unpleasant. And that task is nowhere near as labor-intensive as getting a new residential fence set up. Despite what you think, though, it is entirely possible to complete the fence installation process even when it’s cold and wet. We’ve put together a handy guide on how to manage it, so read on!
Is Installing a Fence During a Rainstorm Safe?
Honestly, it depends on how hard it is raining that day. While installing a fence in the rain seems risky, it’s less dangerous and more time-consuming than you think. Make sure the post holes are deeper than they would normally be. Then use tamped gravel to reinforce the posts. Dry-mix concrete will also be a huge help in keeping your fence upright.
How Do I Actually Do It?
It’s easy to assume that all you have to do is set the fence posts in the ground and move on. The truth is that by doing this, you greatly increase the chances of destructive rot setting in. Backfilling the bottom third of the deeper holes will prove to be super effective. As we noted above, dry-mix concrete is going to be your best bet in damp conditions. Before mixing in calcium chloride to help the concrete set better, be sure to consult your HOA first. That way, you can avoid any unintentional fence installation violations. Once you’ve taken care of that matter, gather the tools and materials you will need: gravel, cement, a shovel, pressure-treated wood, and the post hole digger.
What About Putting Posts in Wet Ground?
Damp soil quickly turns into mud. While it is possible to install your new fence when the ground is wet, avoid doing so during heavy rainfall. Imagine for a moment that your weather forecasts typically consist of clouds and showers – this will make the soil less supportive of any fence. Consequently, the fence installation process gets much trickier. Pressure-treated wood and fence posts will hold up much better against adverse outdoor conditions.
