How flat is your yard? It’s rare that your yard will be completely flat, so don’t worry if it isn’t. However, your next weekend project could be trickier than you might expect if it is to build a DIY fence in your sloped yard. Luckily, we have assembled this helpful guide to show you the way. Here is some advice to make building your DIY fence as easy as possible.
On Small Slopes
Does your yard only have a small slope or a hill? If so, that’s good news. It should be easier to build your fence around it. Keep the horizontal rails of the fence parallel to the ground beneath it. This technique produces the best results when your yard doesn’t have too large of a slope. Even so, you might run into problems with gaps in your new fence. See below for more information on how to deal with fence gaps. Also, you might need to order some custom fence panels. Most fence panels that come with your typical DIY kit might not work because they could look too short once you install them.
On Larger Slopes
It will be much more difficult to build a DIY fence on a larger slope. So what can you do? Your only choice could be to install a stepped fence comprised of pre-existing fence panels. You might want to choose PVC for this type of fence, as it can reduce the size of any potential gaps under the fence.
Dealing with DIY Fence Gaps
Even if you choose a stepped fence, you might not be able to eliminate fence gaps. Every panel needs to be installed so that they are all at the same level. Even so, you might still have gaps, and this gaps might be inconsistent from one panel to the next. Why are fence gaps such a problem? Your pets might have a habit of digging or burrowing under the gaps to try and escape. These gaps might also look ugly. Try planting a vegetable garden to cover the gaps, and see what happens!
