Popular Styles
The most basic form of split rail fencing is a wood post with several rails between them. Chances are, this is the split-rail fence you’ll see, especially when you pass by a farm.
The reason two or three rails are used, and it’s not standard, is quite simple. It all comes down to how tall and how wide the fence is. But because these fences are plain, they often don’t need caps. That said, if you’d like to add a cap onto your split-rail fence, then, by all means, you can!
Crossbuck split rail fences are also common. This design uses two rails, which are joined by an X in between them. The three-rail version of the crossbuck uses a rail that zigzags from one rail to the next. Sometimes, you’ll also run into what is called a stacked split-rail fence. Cedar is a popular type of wood for this fence. The difference is that there are no posts; the zigzag, three-rail crossbuck designed is used again to lend more support.

Most split-rail fencing is made of wood. Cedar, oak, and pine are the three most common types of wood used. Whenever a wood fence is built this way, the staining method becomes even more important. This technique helps protect the fence from rotting or damage from insects and other unwelcome pests. The weathering effect is an aesthetic choice that can make it look even better.
The Uses
Split rail fencing is used much the same way picket fences and chain link fences are used. They help define property lines and are easy to put up and take down. Although they’re not suited for keeping small pets in your yard, they are ideal for controlling the movements of livestock, horses, and other larger animals. They can also keep wild animals out, especially any unexpected predators who might wander into your neighborhood.
