3 Tips to Prevent Your Dog Digging Under Your Backyard Fence

How can you keep your pal from escaping to either get in trouble across the street or run off after a squirrel when you’re least expecting it? The answer is to install a backyard fence.

Do you have an energetic, mischievous, and even rambunctious dog? You’re probably well acquainted with how smart your furry friend is. But how can you keep your pal from escaping to either get in trouble across the street or run off after a squirrel when you’re least expecting it? The answer is to install a backyard fence.

Use Rocks and Gravel

The first measure for stopping your dog from digging under the backyard fence? Using rocks and gravel to discourage their efforts. If you block up any holes they create, they’ll eventually learn that they need to stop doing it. If you can incorporate more rocks and gravel into your current landscape, it makes for an efficient and aesthetically pleasing solution. What’s the best part? These materials are relatively simple to drop in around the edges of your property.

Secure Your Backyard Fence

A second way to keep your dog inside your yard is to increase its security. How do you go about doing this? Think about adding some chicken wire to your backyard fence. For one thing, chicken wire isn’t as dangerous as barbed wire and can be added to your current fence without extensive changes being made. Unless your dog is obsessed with seeing what’s on the other side, they’ll quit their, if you excuse the pun, dogged digging habits.

For the dogs who are determined enough to overcome all your attempts to stop them, you can still use chicken wire. Bury the wire about an inch or two underneath the fence. But make sure that there aren’t exposed sharp edges or pointy ends that might poke your dog a little too hard. If you want, you can also add a layer of mulch to hide the wire and make your new barrier look prettier as well.

Consider Training and Playtime

Maybe your dog is digging so much and so often because it’s bored. If you think that’s the case, spend time with it! More training and playtime can help your dog learn to behave better and put their energy toward making you laugh.
