Oh, deer! While they look cute and cuddly, they can do a number on your lawn. In addition, they can probably ruin your garden, too. You might not be too familiar with deer fences, but like many others, they help keep your property safe from unknown interlopers. They’re considered nuisance animals because they eat our fruits and veggies. And they drop scat everywhere, which is never fun to discover by stepping in it. They carry ticks loaded with Lyme disease, and they can damage trees as well. So what is a homeowner to do?
Use Height, Resistance, and Impediments
One idea is to think in three dimensions. Or, if you prefer, thinking outside the box fence. How tall can your fence be? Even though we suggest that you make it at least seven feet high, your HOA might disagree. But installing a seven-foot-tall fence might not be enough; deer netting on top or at the bottom can be a huge difference-maker. That way, the deer will learn to leave your property alone.
Think About Different Designs Based on Local Regulations
As we alluded to in the previous paragraph, local laws will limit your design choices. Since you must follow all relevant rules and regulations, be more thoughtful about the materials you use. Woven fences and electric fences can scare off deer and elk. But your county might not allow you to install them. Plus, the size of the fence and your available budget could hamper your attempts to protect your landscape. Alternative ideas, which are more than likely cheaper, include metal mesh fencing, plastic mesh, fences crowned with a pergola, and deer fences lined with hedges. The hedges can be on either side of the fence or both if you so desire. Hills and slopes could also act as potential deterrents.
Barricade Your Yard
Privacy fences are versatile defensive measures. For one thing, they keep nosy neighbors from peering into your yard and seeing what you are doing. For families who have screened porches or swimming pools, they might not want their children to be exposed to anyone walking past the house. That’s why backyard fences make so much sense. Barricading your yard means putting up a barrier wall and covering up holes and gaps.
